What's the Difference Between Rebates and Tax Credits?
A rebate is an offer from a private company to reimburse a percentage of a product's price in exchange for choosing that product. In this context, an energy rebate is an offer from an electric or gas company to incentivize energy-efficient choices.
A tax credit is either a tax break or rebate from the government. The federal, state, and local governments can offer tax credits to incentivize people toward certain purchases or investments.
How Do Rebates Work?
When purchasing a product or service with a related rebate, you generally pay full price and receive some form of payment in the mail. In order to receive your rebate payment, you will have to apply for the rebate.
The company providing the rebate will clearly state their terms and limitations for rebates. For example, you may have to apply for a rebate within 90 days of purchase.
How Do Tax Credits Work?
A tax credit is not the same as a discount. If you are working with a contractor, you will pay for their services entirely. The savings will arrive during tax season.
A tax credit is also not automated. The federal government does not keep track of your purchases to ensure you benefit from this tax break.
Make sure your tax professional has the receipts of the work you had completed or appliances you purchased. Let your tax professional know that you are interested in the federal income tax incentive for energy efficiency home improvements. You will submit an additional form to claim your tax credit.
