Insulation Product FAQs
What's The Difference Between A Square Foot And Board Foot?
A board foot is a three-dimensional measurement of a square foot. A square foot only measures two dimensions: length and height. A board foot allows us to represent length, height, and depth.
Learn more about calculating board feet for spray foam.
Why Is Open Cell Less Expensive Than Closed Cell Spray Foam?
Open cell spray foam has a lower density than closed cell foam. When open cell foam is sprayed, more finished product is produced than when spraying closed cell foam. Therefore, open cell material costs are lower than closed cell.
Do I Need An Air Or Vapor Barrier?
Air barriers can help to prevent air infiltration. Air infiltration is when uncontrolled air leaks into your home. Air leakage can bring humidity with it, as well as reduce indoor air quality.
Vapor barriers are necessary for below-grade applications. Below-grade means below ground level, which would include crawl spaces and basements. If your project is above-grade, you may not need a vapor barrier.
What Is R-Value? Does It Matter?
R-value, or resistance value, measures how well a material can resist the conductive transfer of heat. The higher the R-value, the better a material can insulate.
Heat also travels through the air via convection and radiation. R-value does not measure whether or not an insulation can stop heat loss through air leakage.
Can Spray Foam Be Dangerous?
Spray foam insulation is created through a chemical reaction between two chemical components. In their raw form, these chemicals can pose health risks.
However, after spray foam is correctly manufactured, the insulation is a safe and inert substance. Learn more about the safety of spray foam insulation.
