Basement Insulation Options
Which insulation is best for your basement depends on where your insulation is installed. Our team installs closed cell spray foam, open cell spray foam, and batt insulation. Compare your insulation options below.
Closed Cell Spray Foam
Closed cell can be used on basement walls, basement ceilings, and rim joists. Closed cell is the premium insulation option for basements because of its vapor barrier capabilities. Basements are below-grade spaces, so their insulations must be able to combat vapor transfer.
Batt Insulation
Our team does install batt insulation, usually fiberglass, in some basement ceilings. We only recommend batt in this application if the rim joists have been sealed with closed cell spray foam. Otherwise, the batts cannot stop cold air from infiltrating upstairs.
Where Should You Insulate Your Basement?
You can insulate either your basement walls or basement ceiling. Which area you choose depends on how you intend to use the space.
No matter which option you choose, you must also insulate your basement rim joists. Your rim joists are where the walls and ceiling meet, so its insulation is a natural extension of the walls or ceiling.

Do My Rim Joists Need An Airtight Seal?
Your basement rim joists are a key area where cold air can infiltrate. Without an airtight seal, the band boards contribute significantly to air leakage.
Should I Insulate My Basement Walls And Ceiling?
As a general rule, you don't want to insulate both your basement walls and basement ceiling. This can separate your basement from the rest of your home, making it difficult for your HVAC system to manage the conditioned space.
If you finish your basement and want better sound control between floors, you can install batt insulation in the ceiling. However, you would not want to insulate both the walls and ceiling with spray foam.
