Instead of roof insulation, blown-in cellulose can create a barrier between the roofline and the pole building. Cellulose is more affordable, but needs to be paired with an airtight seal for best performance. Dense pack cellulose is more affordable than spray foam, while still providing a high R-value and the possibility of an airtight seal. Dense pack is best for pole buildings with no moisture concerns. The issue is that fiberglass does not stop air transfer and metal buildings are extremely conductive. As air bypasses the fiberglass batt, in a cold climate like southern PA, dew point occurs against the metal substrate. Dew point can lead to condensation, mildew, and mold. There is some debate online whether it is better to install spray foam against a wrap or directly against metal. At South Central Services, we insulate directly against the metal.
