Pole Building Insulation Options
There are several options for pole building insulation. Our team installs closed cell spray foam, blown-in cellulose, and dense pack. Compare your insulation options below.
Dense Pack Cellulose
Useful for pole building walls. Dense pack cellulose is more affordable than spray foam, while still providing a high R-value and the possibility of an airtight seal. Dense pack is best for pole buildings with no moisture concerns. It also requires a liner.
Fiberglass Is A Poor Choice For Pole Buildings
South Central Services does not install fiberglass batts in pole building wall cavities. The issue is that fiberglass does not stop air transfer and metal buildings are extremely conductive. As air bypasses the fiberglass batt, in a cold climate like southern PA, dew point occurs against the metal substrate. Dew point can lead to condensation, mildew, and mold. There is also the potential for the fiberglass to absorb that moisture.

Can You Use Open Cell Spray Foam For My Pole Building?
In our climate zone, open cell spray foam cannot be used in metal pole buildings. Open cell cannot create a vapor barrier and is not a good option for substrates with condensation issues.

Do You Spray Insulation Directly Against The Metal Panels?
There is some debate online whether it is better to install spray foam against a wrap or directly against metal. At South Central Services, we insulate directly against the metal.
While this does mean that the insulation will need to be replaced alongside any bent metal panels, the direct adhesion of the foam helps to prevent rust.
